Every week, over students from across New England — absolute beginners to the most advanced young musicians — participate in lessons, classes, and ensembles. NEC Prep is one of the largest programs of its kind in the nation. Young singers at NEC get a very special kind of training with lots of variety—voice lessons, choruses, jazz, musical theatre, rock, world music, and more! Every musician is a composer. Students as young as eight can start learning to hear and create the elements of music. Foundation classes like chorus, music theory, composition, and the art of practice and performance are for every musician at NEC, whatever the level or instrument! Considered one of the leading music schools in the United States , it is also the oldest independent music conservatory in the nation. The conservatory offers additional graduate degrees in accompaniment; choral, wind ensemble, and orchestral conducting; musicology; music education; and vocal pedagogy.

It is the oldest independent music conservatory in the United States. The conservatory is located on Huntington Avenue of the Arts near Boston Symphony Hall and is home to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies along with more in its Preparatory School as well as the School of Continuing Education. Also offered are five-year joint double-degree programs with Harvard University and Tufts University. Its primary concert hall, Jordan Hall , designed by Edmund M. Wheelright contains an organ modeled after the one at Santa Maria Della Scala in Siena [4] It hosts approximately 1, concerts each year. He met with a group of Boston's most influential musical leaders to discuss a school based on the conservatories of Europe.
